Home Reading Challenge
Pupils can enter our Home Reading Challenge every term. Pupils, with the support of their families, can read books at home and complete the Home Reading Challenge Form to show that they have finished a book
A book is completed when the pupil has read it and a comment has been made on the form. You can view/download a selection of example questions to ask the pupils after they have read a book, set at different levels. There is one set of questions for fiction books and one for factual texts.
Some books may be taken from school as Home Readers. These are placed on bookshelves in school and marked with a green sticker. However, pupils can read books they have at home too. Magazines, comics, internet reading and other types of text are equally acceptable as books themselves. At the end of term, dojo awards will be given to every pupil to have fully taken part in the challenge.
Any pupils wishing to enter can ask for a form from Mr Maguire or you can download it from the webpage. When the form is complete, the pupil is to hand it into Mr Maguire and start a new one.
The ‘Spelling Test Template’ can be used for any of the word lists that you can view/download from this page. You can read the words from this list and the pupils will write them down and try to spell them correctly. The test can then be marked and the pupils will then know what words they need to further work on.

Spelling Words List
The ‘Bank View Spelling Word Lists’ include 9 Phases of spelling lists and range from simple words to high levels words to cater for a wide variety of pupils’ spelling abilities.
At home, pupils can choose to write about many things. What is important is that they try to improve their writing by attempting to work to the best of their ability at the Stage they’re writing is at. At Bank View, we have marking systems for 4 Stages, which are available on this page for you to look at. Parents/carers and pupils can use these marking Stages at home to check what they should be aiming to include in their writing and to help them improve their writing by practicing these skills. Links to 4 Writing Stage Marking sheets are below.
If you wish to know your pupils’ writing Stage, contact the school or use the marking Stages to check for yourself. Homework can be handed to the pupils’ English teacher. If your pupil is working at a higher level than Stage 4, more advanced homework will be set.
